Can Buganvilla

A private house for a local ibicencan family has been built on a north-east-facing site with uninterrupted valley and sea views. The site is terraced with stone walls descending to the North-East, so the house is adapted to these terraces, becoming an important element in the design and adaptation of the villa. The challenges of brief and site were compounded by strict local planning regulations, adopting the solution of partially burying part of the house, whilst maintaining enough light by opening skylights throughout the villa.

Organised on two levels, the house opens out towards the north-east with living area, dining area and bedrooms overlooking the pool and views. The main living area is the family domain containing the book-lined hearth and an open kitchen on one side of the living space. The owner has a personal interest in cooking, which is reflected in a professionally equipped kitchen and pantry, with it’s own exterior access and directly connected to an outdoor dining space.

The northern facade is mostly glazed, alternating transparent, white and stone, to vary the quality of light and privacy, using local and traditional textures in order to integrate the house to its surroundings.

The combination of inside and outside circulation enables the house to offer the family and its friends an exceptional degree of community, as well as respecting the privacy of the individuals.
